How the Holy Quran should be read?
Bismillahir Rahman nir Raheem
Assalam oalaikum,
There are two important terms which should be understood properly under the topic of Quran recitation: Tajweed and Tarteel. Let us discuss these terms one by one.
Tajweed refers to reciting each Quranic alphabet with the accurate sound. Basically it is the learning of Prophet Muhammad's (saw) pronunciation and accent of reciting the Holy Quran. Reciting the Quran with tajweed simply means that a person is applying the rules of tajweed. Some examples of the rules of Tajweed are as follows:
In Arabic language there are 6 alphabets that have to be pronounced from the bottom, middle and the top of the throat.
There are 7 bold alphabets that have to be pronounced with a strong voice.
There are 3 harakaat (movements) in Arabic
A word related to Tajweed is ‘mujawwad’.
Tarteel on the other hand means reading the Quran with a particular rhythm, keeping the rules of Tajweed intact. It is the way in which Prophet Mohammad (saw) used to recite (as instructed by Allah (swt). Allah (swt) instructs Prophet Mohammad (saw) in Surah Muzammil, verse 4: ‘Wa rattilil qur’aana tarteelaa’, which means ‘and recite the Qur’an in slow measured rhythmic tones'. The Arabic word for ‘slow, measured rythmic tones” is tarteel. According to Ibn Kahteer the tafsir of this verse is to recite the Qur’an slowly, making all the letters clear because this helps to understand and ponder over the meaning of the Qur’an. The word related to Tarteel is ‘Murattal’.
When Hazrat Ali(R.A) was asked the meaning of 'tarteel', he replied, "Being an expert in pronouncing letters with Tajweed and knowledge of breaks (waqf) is tarteel."
Allah (swt) says in the Holy Quran: ‘... and We have revealed it with tarteel"(Al-furqan 32/25)
In another chapter of the Holy Quran Allah (swt) says, ‘And We have revealed Quran clearly and profoundly with tarteel so that you may recite it for people with tarteel".(bani Israel,106/17).
. “Whoever does not chant the Qur’an is not among us”. (Abu daawuud).
These verses of the Quran prove the importance of reciting Quran with tajweed and tarteel. This can be possible if we learn Quran-ul tajweed and tarteel from a reliable source.
